About the role
Tonic builds AI that healthcare professionals use in their daily practice. Tonic AI is a clinical AI co-pilot for physicians and pharmacists, live across Portugal, Spain, Italy and France and now opening in the UK and Germany. Tonic BI turns the aggregated, anonymised questions those professionals ask into market intelligence for the life sciences industry. One product sits next to a clinical decision. The other delivers real-world intelligence to life sciences companies and healthcare service providers. You would own both.
As AI Product Owner you own the product backlog end to end. You translate user, clinical and commercial needs into a clear set of priorities; write the requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria that Engineering and Data & AI build against; run the sprint cycle from refinement and planning through delivery, review and iteration; decide what ships and what waits; and stay accountable for the outcome once it is live. Discovery, prioritisation, specification, delivery and iteration – all of it is yours.
This is not a standard SaaS product role. Our output is generated rather than deterministic, so a large part of the job is deciding what โgood enoughโ means, working with the Data & AI and Compliance teams on how we evaluate it, and writing acceptance criteria for behaviour that cannot simply be asserted true or false. Tonic AI is also a CE-marked medical device, which means the quality bar is set externally and the work gets documented properly.
Owning two products at once means moving between a regulated clinical tool and a commercial data platform in the same week, with different users, different buyers and different definitions of success. That is a lot of surface area for one person, which is exactly why the role needs someone who prioritises ruthlessly and says no with a reason.
The role is hands-on and sits close to Engineering, Data & AI, Design, Clinical and Commercial. You will report to the Head of Product.
What you will do
- Backlog ownership: own and continuously refine the backlog across both Tonic AI and Tonic BI, keeping priorities clear, well understood and tied to product, clinical and commercial goals.
- Requirements and user stories: translate user, clinical and commercial needs into precise requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria, including for AI-generated output where โcorrectโ is a judgement rather than a simple test.
- Sprint planning and execution: run the sprint cycle with Engineering and Data & AI, from refinement and planning through delivery, review and iteration.
- AI quality and evaluation: work with the Data & AI team on what we measure, what threshold is good enough to ship, and how we detect regressions in model behaviour.
- Prioritisation: balance two products against one delivery capacity, weighing user impact, commercial return and technical cost, and be able to explain every trade-off you made.
- Product discovery: talk directly to physicians and pharmacists, and to the commercial team on the life sciences / healthcare services side, then turn what you hear into prioritised opportunities.
- Quality and compliance: keep product work aligned with the requirements that come with a CE-marked medical device, supported by our regulatory team – clear requirements, traceable decisions, controlled changes.
- Multi-market rollout: support launches across our markets, accounting for language, local clinical practice and regulatory differences.
- Communication and documentation: write clear product documentation and keep decisions, priorities and trade-offs legible across the company.
- Continuous improvement: help the team sharpen its product development process, ways of working and delivery practices.
What we are looking for
- 4-5+ years as a Product Owner, Product Manager or equivalent in a technical product environment.
- Strong practical command of Scrum, Agile methodologies and sprint-based development, including backlog refinement and prioritisation.
- Proven ability to write clear user stories, acceptance criteria and requirements, and to break complex problems into buildable pieces.
- Enough technical fluency to hold a real conversation with engineers and data scientists about implementation and trade-offs.
- Strong stakeholder management: able to hold a position with commercial, clinical and technical stakeholders in the same week.
- Structured and detail-oriented, comfortable moving fast without letting the documentation slip.
- Full professional proficiency in Portuguese and English.
Nice to have
- Experience shipping AI or ML features, particularly around evaluation and output quality.
- Experience in healthcare, digital health, medtech or life sciences and regulated or audited products.
Why join us?
Healthcare professionals across four countries use our products in their daily work, and two more markets are opening. Tonic AI is a CE-marked medical device, which very few AI products in Europe can say, and it is used on real cases by real clinicians rather than sitting in a pilot that never leaves the slide deck.
You would own product for both an AI clinical tool and the data platform built on top of it, in a team small enough that your decisions show up in what ships within weeks. If you want to build AI in healthcare and have it reach real clinical practice rather than stop at a proof of concept, this is the job.
